EDITION #2: THIRD INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION SUMMIT: NEW DIRECTIONS IN ARCHITECTURE EDUCATION

ANCB in collaboration with IAES and UCLA

This publication documents the 3rd International Architectural Education Summit (IAES ) 2013, which was jointly conceptualized and organized by ANCB together with UCLA Architecture and Urban Design, Los Angeles and IE School of Architecture, Madrid, to provide a platform for exploring approaches to address new directions in architecture education.

BACKGROUND
It was Hitoshi Abe, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design Chair, who in 2008 initiated the IAES as a biannual conference amongst an invited group of leading peers to discuss the most pertinent issues in architecture and urban design. In these times of continuous worldwide change, the IAES provides an important chance to evaluate how best to prepare the upcoming generation of architects and city-makers for current and future challenges.

As neither an academic institution, university nor school, but instead a new type of hybrid cultural platform focusing on the inseparable interaction between urban environment and social life, it was not only a great challenge for ANCB to develop and host the IAES at our venue in Berlin but also a consequent and logical step in our approach to consider the interdisciplinary possibilities for architecture education, renegotiating the process and interplay of innovation, technology, culture, and behavior in a public discourse.

The 3rd IAES addressed some of our current ANCB questions directly to this distinguished group of participants – academics, practitioners, policy makers and industry representatives – focusing on the acute issues at the intersection of three thematic panels: The Role of Alternative Architecture Education Platforms, Interdisciplinary Strategies in Architecture Education and Collaboration between Architecture Education and Non-Academic Partners.

This publication gives an insight into the recent discussion on architecture education and emphasizes that the perception of architecture needs to be continuously anchored in a broader sense as an essential part of our cultural, social and societal life.
