SAVE AND RESCUE - FREI OTTO'S MULTIHALLE IN MANNHEIM

Call for the recognition and protection of an engineering milestone

To this day the Mannheim Multihalle by Frei Otto, dating back to 1975, has remained a unique structure, inspiring the imaginations of architecture enthusiasts from across the globe. Although it was originally intended as a temporary structure for the Bundesgartenschau (Federal German Garden Show), the lightweight, wooden gridshell structure, developed by Pritzker Prize-winner Frei Otto, celebrated its 40th inaugural anniversary this year. The engineers collaborating with Frei Otto went on to establish the firm BuroHappold Engineering and subsequently completed similar gridshells including the Japanese Pavilion at the EXPO 2000 and the Weald and Downland Museum in England (2002). The municipality of Mannheim is now desperately trying to save the Mannheim Multihalle, which is in dire need of refurbishment. Due to the building’s underutilisation, it is proving a difficult task to justify the acquisition of necessary funding. The pros and cons of preserving this architectural icon will be debated in a public presentation and discussion, which will be attended by some of the original project team members.
