Cities and Change and Challenge

There have always been conflicts between monument protection and contemporary architecture in the reuse of historical buildings, nowadays exemplified in the demand for the successful economical redevelopment of former industrial sites.
Creative actors and creative industries are increasingly a part of this transformation process - often rejecting the development objectives. These four perspectives: monument protection, contemporary architecture, urban development and creative industries, seem to come into increasing conflict due to differing objectives when dealing with industrial heritage. Yet, all of them are engaged together in the transformation processes of industrial sites all over Europe. In all cases the key question is, whether the diverse perspectives
share common ground on which a careful change and (re)use of the
industrial heritage can be established?
