BACKGROUND
Singapore-based architects WOHA, founded by Richard Hassell and Wong Mun Summ, have gained global recognition for their integration of environmental and social principles at every stage of the design process. Since WOHA’s work was first exhibited at Aedes Architecture Forum in 2006, they have gained international recognition for their award winning practice and innovative projects. Built across Asia and around the globe, these include the PARKROYAL on Pickering Hotel, the SkyVille @ Dawson social housing project and the recently completed Oasia Hotel Downtown.

Published in collaboration with Patrick Bingham-Hall, WOHA’s Garden City Mega City, is a plea for urgent action to rethink, re-plan and remediate the world’s mega cities for the age of global warming. Using WOHA’s 'Macro-Architecture Micro-Urbanism' approach as a prototype, the book presents a compelling manifesto for densely settled, yet comprehensively green and ultimately self-sufficient cities of the future.

Berlin-based architect Matthias Sauerbruch of Sauerbruch Hutton discussed with Richard Hassell & Wong Mun Summ their architectural practice and their approach to address the current urban crisis.

THE BOOK
The book, published by Pesaro Publishing, features a two-sided, tête-bêche format. One half of the book articulates the problems facing cities in a time of climate change and rapid population growth. Striking photography portrays the depressing realities of the mega cities, such as Mumbai, Manila, Jakarta, and Delhi. The other half of the book explains WOHA’s architectural and planning solutions, which are extensively illustrated with renderings, axonometric drawings, and photographs of completed schemes.

Garden City Mega City: Rethinking Cities for the Age of Global Warming. By Patrick Bingham-Hall. London: Pesaro Publishing, 2016. The book was on sale during the event.
